Explaining the role of parents' economic, social and cultural capital in children's social skills: Investigating the mediating role of moral character

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to causal explaining of children's social skills based on economic, social and cultural capital, considering the mediating role of parents' moral character. The statistical population was the parents of elementary school students in Yazd city in the academic year 2022-2023. The sample size was 500 people and they were selected by cluster sampling method, and finally 447 people completed the questionnaires. The research measurement included questionnaires of moral character, Social Skills (SSRS) (Parent version), Cultural Capital, Family Social Capital (FSCQ), Economic Capital. SPSS26 and PLS-SEM3 software were used to analyze the data, the results showed that social capital (β=0.23), cultural capital (β=0.13) and moral character (β=0.28) predict children's social skills, but economic capital (β=0.07) no predict children's social skills. Social capital (β=0.37) and economic capital (β=0.13) predicted moral character, but cultural capital (β=0.07) was not a predictor of moral character. According to the findings, social capital (β=0.10) and economic capital (β=0.065), through the mediation of moral character, explain children's social skills.. In short, the results of the present study showed that social capital and economic capital can lead to the growth of social skills in children due to the effects on parents moral character.
