Abstract

This study examined the mediating effect of coping styles on the relationship between self-esteem and emotional well-being among male and female university students. In this correlational study, 300 university students (150 male and 150 female) responded to the Rosenberg’ Self-Esteem Scale, the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations-Short Form (CISS-SF) and the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS). Path analysis was used to assess coping styles on the relationship between self-esteem and emotional well-being among male and female university students. Results based on AMOS software indicated that the partially mediated model of task-oriented and emotion-oriented coping styles on the relationship between self-esteem and emotional well-being had good fit to data. Furthermore, all of the regression weights in the hypothesized model were statistically significant and model' predictors included self-esteem and task-oriented and emotion-oriented, accounted for 36% 47% of the variance positive and negative affect, respectively. Overall, the results of this study showed that by improving students' coping resources, their level of well-being can be increased.
