Abstract

The present study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of cognitive therapy based on mindfulness on the mental flexibility and cognitive fusion in the patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). It was a quasi-experimental study with pretest, posttest, control group and two-month follow-up period design. The statistical population of the present study included IBS patients who referred to therapy centers and gastroenterologists in Esfahan in 2019. 27 IBS patients were selected through available sampling method and randomly accommodated into experimental and control groups. The experimental group received eight seventy-five-minute sessions of cognitive therapy based on mindfulness (Kabat-Zinn, 2003) during two months. The applied questionnaires included mental flexibility and questionnaires (MFQ) (Dennis, Vander Wal, 2010) and cognitive fusion Questionnaire (CFQ) (Gillanders et al, 2010). The data were analyzed through repeated measurement ANOVA and Bonferroni follow-up test. The results showed that the cognitive therapy based on mindfulness has significant effect on the mental flexibility and cognitive fusion in IBS patients (P<0.001).
