The Effect of Group and Individual Physical Activities on the Quality of Life of Elderly Women with Two Optimistic and Pessimistic Cognitive Styles

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the effect of group and individual sports activities on the quality of life of elderly women aged 65 to 75 with two cognitive styles: optimistic and pessimistic. This quasi-experimental study was applied in terms of purpose with a pre-test and post-test design. The statistical population of the research included elderly women 65 to 75 years old, in Tehran City in 1402. The sample included 40 elderly people who were selected conveniently. The World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire form 36 (SF-36) and Shearer and Carver's Optimism Questionnaire were distributed in the pre-test stage, and then the groups were exposed to walking and aerobic intervention. To analyze the data the Mixed Model ANOVA were used in SPSS-27 software. The results of mixed model ANOVA showed a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test in the quality of life of groups (P<0.05). The results of composite variance analysis demonstrated that the effectiveness of group sports activity on the quality of life of elderly women with an optimistic style. It can be said that sports activities improve the quality of life and increase the health of the elderly through lifestyle modification.
