The Effectiveness of Meta-Cognitive Therapy on Cognitive-Attentional Syndrome, Catastrophizing and Pain Intensity in Women with Fibromyalgia

Abstract

Aim: The purpose of present study was to examine the effectiveness of metacognitive therapy on cognitive-attentional syndrome, catastrophizing and pain intensity in women with fibromyalgia.
Method: This research was a semi-experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design and a control group. The statistical population included women suffering from fibromyalgia went to specialized rheumatology and orthopedic clinics in Tehran in April and May 2022, from which 42 patients were selected using the available sampling method. Then, the participants were randomly divided in the experimental and control groups. The participants were assessed based on the cognitive attention syndrome scale (CAS-1), pain catastrophizing scale (PCS) and pain intensity scale questionnaire (SCPQ) and then they participated in 10 60-minute sessions. Descriptive statistics and covariance analysis methods were used to analyze data via SPSS 26.
Results: The results of the analysis of the data obtained from the pre-tests and post-tests taken from the participants at a significant level (P0.01) showed that metacognitive therapy meaningfully reduced attentional cognitive syndrome, pain catastrophizing and pain intensity in fibromyalgia patients.
Conclusion: According to the obtained results, it can be said that metacognitive model can be used to reduce pain and increase the well-being of patients with fibromyalgia and chronic pain.
