Investigating the relationship between perfectionism and social anxiety considering the mediating role of perceived stress and cognitive regulation of emotion in Tehran University students

Abstract

Aim: Aim of present study was investigating relationship between perfectionism and social anxiety, considering the mediating role of perceived stress and cognitive emotion regulation. Method: The research method was corr elation with structural equation model. The statistical population of research was students of Tehran University, from which a sample of 400 people was taken by multi-stage random sampling method. The research tool was multidimensional questionnaire of perfectionism (Hewitt et al., 1991), perceived stress (Cohen et al., 1983), anxiety in social interactions (Heimberg et al., 1992) and emotion regulation strategies (Gross et al., 2003). SPSS version 23 and AMOS software version 24 were used for data analysis. Results: The results of research showed that perfectionism has an effect on social anxiety both directly and indirectly through the mediation of cognitive emotion regulation and perceived stress (β=0.265, p<0.01). Conclusion: Present study can be considered as a theoretical and practical model for understanding the relationship between perfectionism and social anxiety by considering the mediating role of perceived stress and cognitive emotion regulation.
