Comparison of the Effectiveness of Group Therapies based on Acceptance and Commitment and Schema on Coping Style Avoidance and Body Mass Index in Obese People with Emotional Eating

Abstract

Background and Aim: The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of group therapies based on acceptance and commitment and schema on coping-avoidance style in obese and overweight people with emotional eating.
Methods: The present study was a quasi-experimental study in which a pretest-posttest design with a control group. The statistical population of the study included all overweight and obese people who referred to nutrition centers under the Ministry of Health from September to December 2016 to treat their obesity-related problem. Using cluster sampling method and based on entry and exit criteria, a sample of 60 people was selected and randomly assigned to three groups of 20 people (acceptance and commitment therapy,
Results: The results showed that group therapies based on acceptance and commitment and schema therapy were effective on coping style avoidance in obese and overweight people with emotional overeating and reduced avoidance of experimental groups compared to the group has been controlled.
Conclusion: Based on the findings, it can be concluded that group therapy based on acceptance, commitment and schema therapy can reduce the use of coping style avoidance in obese and overweight people.
