The Relationship between Perceived Parenting Styles and Fear of Being Single: The Mediating Role of Dependency and Undeveloped Self Schemas

Abstract

The aim of the research was to investigate the relationship between perceived parenting styles and fear of being single through the mediation of dependency schemas and undeveloped self. The research method was applied and descriptive.The statistical population, all students of Tehran University, included 50,000 people, of which 334 people were selected by available sampling method. Descriptive and inferential statistics and path analysis methods were used for data analysis to evaluate the proposed model. Research tools were Perception of Parents Questionnaire (POPS), Fear of being single Scale (FOBSS) and Young Schema Short Form (YSQ-SF). Data were analyzed by SPSS and AMOS software. According to the findings, there was a significant relationship between the perception of parents' parenting styles with dependency and undeveloped self schemas, and also between the aforementioned schemas and fear of being single. Perception of father's parenting style indirectly and perception of mother's parenting style directly had a negative relationship with fear of being single. According to the results of the proposed model, the relationship between perceived parenting styles and fear of being single with the mediation of dependency schemas and undeveloped self has a favorable fit and can play an important role in the important decisions of children.
