Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of mentalization-based group therapy (MBT-G) on object relations and difficulty in emotion regulation in people with dependent personality syndrome.
Method: current research was semi-experimental with a pretest-posttest with a control group and a one month follow up. The statistical population of the research was residents aged 18 to 40 living in Tehran.A total of thirty-two participants who met criteria for a current episode of DPD were chosen by targeted sampling method from Tehran city. Those included were randomly allocated to a 20-session MBT (n =16) treatment group and one control group (n=16). Subjects were assessed at pre-treatment, post-test, and 1-month follow-up and they completed questionnaires, Bell Object Relations and Reality Testing Inventory (BORRTI) questioners to assess the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DRES) and Dependent Personality Inventory-Revised (DPI-R). Data analysis was done with analysis of variance test with repeated measurement and using SPSS26 software.
Results: There were significant improvements in object relations, difficulties in emotion regulation, and dependence symptoms in MBT-G group over the post and follow-up period (P<0.05).
Conclusion: The results show that MBT is significantly effective in improving object relation and difficulties in emotion regulation in patients with DPD.
