Identifying the Components of Cognitive Capital (A Meta-Synthesis Study)

Abstract

The present study aimed to identify and suggest a model of cognitive capital. The meta-synthesis method and a qualitative approach were employed to conduct this research. Consequently, the study population consisted of 814 scientific records from seven international databases (Sincedirect, Sage, GoogleScholar, Emerald, PubMed, Springer, ResearchGate) and three national databases (Noormagz, Magiren, and SID), that were retrieved between 1997 and 2025. Ultimately, 27 scientific documents were chosen and analyzed following a comprehensive examination of their titles, research methodologies, and findings. Using thematic content analysis, the analysis was conducted to ensure the quality of the research by documenting each stage and ensuring high accuracy. The research procedure was informed by expert feedback. Additionally, the CASP (Critical Appraisal Skills Programme) instrument was implemented to regulate the quality of the scientific documents. The proposed model consists of 31 subcomponents and four primary components. The main components of cognitive capital have been identified as the common cognitive background, common cognitive capabilities, common cognitive skills, and common cognitive characteristics, as indicated by the results. By identifying the components of cognitive capital and presenting an integrated model, cognitive capital is highlighted as a set of cognitive and socio-emotional skills, intellectual abilities, and shared values and norms among individuals and groups, which significantly enhance organizational and interpersonal communication and collaboration.
